How to Deal with a Loved One’s Addiction

When someone you love is struggling with an addiction, it can be difficult to figure out what your place is in the whole thing. Addiction is classified as a serious disease by the DSM-5 and the community of medical and psychological professionals. Because of the way addiction manifests itself, the disease is often called a “family disease” due to the way that it affects more people than just the addicted individual. At United Drug Rehab Center, we like to include family members in their loved one’s treatment program as much as possible. Family therapy with the client’s therapist is a great way for family members to be able to communicate with the client about how the addiction has affected them and to work together on post treatment plans for when the client returns home. If your loved one is not ready to seek treatment, here is a list of things for family members to keep in mind.

Be sure to:

Continue to encourage the user to ask for help.

Take note of how the user’s addiction affects each family member.

Focus on the good in others as well as yourself.

Take steps to better yourself each day.

Become involved with local Nar-Anon or Al-Anon support groups.

Approach your anxieties one day at a time.

Permit the user to accept his or her own responsibilities.

Remember that you can only control your own attitude and reactions.

Practice being honest and open in all areas of your life.

And remember not to:
Take on guilt for someone else’s actions.

Lecture, argue, shame, or bring up past mistakes.

Underestimate the necessity of releasing with love, at times.

Become a doormat or put your own needs second.

Cover up or rescue an addict from their consequences.

Forget about the opportunity to grow from a crisis.

Become a manipulator or make threats you won’t follow through on.

Demand perfection of others or yourself.

Forget that addiction is an illness.

Why is United Drug Rehab Group the Best Option?

United Drug Rehab Group customizes all of our addiction programs to each client’s personal needs. Addiction is not a cookie cutter illness. What’s right for some may not be right for others. We encourage the use of positive coping mechanisms to manage triggers and temptations during addiction treatment. Each client’s program begins with a clinically managed detox where our helpful staff ensures that the process is safe and comfortable for every individual. Following detox, our clients are placed into luxury drug rehab where they recover alongside others in treatment. Individual therapy, group counseling, and family sessions are all incorporated into the addiction treatment plans at United Drug Rehab Group. Contact one of our experienced intake coordinators today if you or someone you care for is ready to seek treatment from a highly effective drug rehab center.
