Art Therapy as a Recovery Option for Illicit Drug Addiction

What is an Illicit Drug?

Illicit drugs are considered to be hard drugs. These can be substances such as cocaine, LSD, heroin, and hallucinogens. Health Line states that illicit drugs are grouped by their side effects and placed into four categories:

  • Stimulating drugs, such as cocaine, are considered “uppers” and usually result in hyperactivity.
  • Opioids such as the painkiller, heroin, cause mood changes. Changes of behavior are also followed by a slower heart rate and intake of oxygen.
  • Hallucinogenic drugs like “shrooms” or LSD have the ability to alter reality, time, and space.
  • Sedative and depressants are not always illegal or illicit drugs. These can sometimes take form of prescription drugs. The abuse occurs when the medication is overused and not taking according to the prescription.

How Do You Know You’re Addicted to Drugs?

Health Line, also shows a list of the addictive side effects that illicit drugs possess. For stimulants you may find that you will experience:

  • lack of sleep
  • depression
  • always dilated pupils

Opioids use can result in:

  • malnutrition, which causes weakness in the immune system
  • infections transmitted by blood
  • problems with breathing

For hallucinogens:

  • pupils that are dilated
  • clumsy movement
  • elevated blood pressure
  • dizziness
  • nausea/throwing up
  • possible violent or suicidal moods

Therapy and Art

Art allows for you to use your creative outlet and for some people, this could be easier than talking or explaining how they feel internally. Creative Art , “can help raise self-esteem and provide an opportunity to create new experiences beyond habitual and painful emotional patterns.” Art can be anything in the form of painting, drawing, coloring, dancing, poetry, and much more.
